The game of AFL has a strong international following.
As the game expands into new contexts, we want non-native English speakers to have the opportunity to engage with the AFL in their first language.
This is especially the case in China. With approximately 900 million first-language Chinese speakers, the Footy Dictionary is an important resource to help grow and expand the game of AFL in China.
There are also approximately 100 million people in China who speak English as an additional language. And there are more than 200 000 speakers of Chinese living in Australia. The Footy Dictionary provides those speakers with an exciting language learning opportunity; the potential to ‘do’ and ‘share’ AFL in both Chinese and English. In this way, the Footy Dictionary is also a valuable resource for the language learning classroom.
