The Australian Football English/Chinese Dictionary
A collaboration between the Port Adelaide Football Club, The University of South Australia and CCTV5+.
The Footy Dictionary is an open access, online dictionary that provides Chinese translations (in simplified Chinese characters) of key words from the Australian Football League (AFL).

Who is it for?
The Footy Dictionary is for everyone! It is especially useful for:
- Chinese speakers who want to learn about, talk about, and engage in the AFL through their first-language.
- English speakers who want to learn the Chinese equivalent for words in the AFL.
- Language learners of Chinese or English who want to develop their knowledge and competence in their respective ‘other’ language.
- Language lovers (or ‘lingauphiles’) who want to explore the ways in which different languages represent the world around us, in this case, the uniquely Australian context of the AFL, from a Chinese language perspective.
The Footy Dictionary is different to a traditional dictionary. As an online resource, it is a live, dynamic dictionary. Over time, additional content will be added, including new AFL words, images and videos. There are also plans to include audio, which will enable users to hear the pronunciation of key AFL words in either Mandarin Chinese or Australian English.
Of course in order for the Footy Dictionary to develop and evolve, we want your feedback!
